Theodore “Ted” Kiefer, 62, passed away early Monday morning, June 8, 2015, surrounded by his loving family in his home.

Born on July 2, 1952 in Panama City, Florida to Lorraine and Theodore Kiefer, Ted graduated from Belvidere High School before joining the United States Army, where he sang in the military choir. Music was in Ted’s soul: He was an incredible guitarist and band leader who took great joy in entertaining a crowd. He was also passionate about food and wine, and enjoyed his work as the Midwest regional manager for Bogle Vineyards. Ted loved cooking, puttering around in the yard, and, most of all, spending time with his family.

Ted was a tremendous caretaker and source of strength to all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Elizabeth and Caroline; his parents, Ted and Lorraine; his siblings Mary, Patricia, Michael, and Cindy; his step daughters, Brynn and Julie; his grandchildren, Mae and Liam; as well as all the nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins, and friends who adored him.

Private services will take place in Belvidere; a celebration of Ted’s life for friends and family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Healing Pathways Cancer Resource Center of Rockford, as was Ted’s wish. To light a candle or share a memory, please visit

I am so grateful that I got to spend some time with you last week. We are still on for that lunch you promised, we will just have to change the venue. My prayers continue to be with you and your family. I am sad, yet smiling knowing that you are with the Lord for all eternity. Until we meet again. Gary

Mr. Kiefer, I remember when I was a very little kid going to watch the fireworks and watching you in your band in Cherry Valley. You always made my mom, dad, and sister smile. You were a nice guy. I remember you being a very "hip" and "cool" dad when I was little. RIP to a great guy.

As a former employee, a customer and most importantly, as a friend, I always enjoyed talking to Ted and sharing his life successes. He was a great individual with a likeness that very few enjoy and I wish to mention to family and friends that his life experience enjoyed by me will not be forgotten.

While Ted was not a student of mine he was a close friends with many who were. In speaking to a former student he related that he had been a small kid in high school and that whenever anybody would give him trouble and Ted, though older, was around he would put an end to the bullying. We were all aware of his talent, and his humor but perhaps this memory speaks the loudest of what Ted was a truly gentle and kind man.

I have only known Ted for a few years but he was full of life and I enjoyed my time with him. We worked together at Bogle and I appreciated his musical talent as well as his business ideas . I am so sad for his family, they lost him way too early. He spoke so highly of his girls and obviously loved his family very much. It was a short friendship but I will always remember him. My thoughts are with his family.
