Grief Counseling
We have partnered with Patricia Cox, R.N., A.C.S.W., Ph.D. to offer families grief counseling. Patricia has a very diverse background as a counselor that includes over 35 years of therapeutic experience. She specializes in issues of depression, anxiety, life transitions, and grief and loss. Patricia holds a Ph.D. in Psychology and has experience as a registered nurse, teacher, and clinical social worker. She currently maintains a private practice as a psychotherapist and family counselor.

Support Groups

Elizabeth Ministry – An outreach to women in special times of motherhood.  The purpose is to affirm, support, encourage and assist women in response to their needs during the childbearing years.  (Contact Barb Beckett 815-398-4284)

Glory Girls  – Christian based group for widows for grief processing and socialization.  (Contact Nita Osbern 815-871-2569) Meets the First Saturday of the Month for Potluck.  The Second and Fourth Friday at restaurants for dinner and game night.  The Third Thursday of the month at a member’s home.

GriefShare  – A friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. You don’t have to go through the grieving process alone. To find a group in your area, check out GriefShare’s website at www.griefshare.org

Group Hope  – A program of the Mental Health Association of Rock Valley (MHARRV). In addition, Group Hope is associated with Mental Health America (MHA) and affiliated as a local chapter of the national Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA).  We are interested people who help and support each other.  Our program is offered as a free/no-charge opportunity to talk with, and listen to, others who know the personal nature of depression, mania, anxiety, OCD and panic attacks. Healing Hearts A parent support group is an informal monthly gathering of parents who are enduring the death of their baby. We meet the third (3rd) Monday of every month, EXCEPT we do not meet in December, at The Haven Network office starting at 6:30pm. In addition to the specific topic for each session, there will also be time for parents to join together to engage in conversation about their personal experience and form friendships with other families in similar situations. Heart to Heart  – A support group for grieving parents of minor children on “As Needed” basis.  An eight session program to provide help in coping with the death of your child.  (Contact Stacy Zell-Weavel, or Marcia Stalter @ 815-971-5309)

Heartland Hospice  – Meets every Tuesday at 6:00pm at Swedish American Hospital, Conference Rooms 2 & 3 on the First Floor.  Meets every Friday at 1:30pm at Peterson Meadows (Contact Kelly Ziemer-Hillan or Sylvia @ 815-397-3691

Journey Care – Grief Support Group meets the third Monday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at Heritage Woods of Belvidere in the community Room.  Heritage Woods is located at 4730 Squaw Prairie Road, Belvidere.

Mothers of Adult Children – Meets the Second Wednesday of the month, @ 2:30pm at Fairhaven Retirement Center (Contact Karon Pfile 815-636-4750)

Northern Illinois Hospice – Open to anyone who has experienced the death of someone close to them, our groups and workshops focus on learning, healing and encouragement. Conversation topics include: understanding grief and mourning, common myths about grief, available resources, the importance of community, helping others to heal ourselves, and self-care. Please note: new members may join during the first and second meetings of any 6-week session. Shorter sessions are open to anyone who would like to join, however, sessions build upon themselves, so it is best to attend all of them.
