Obituary

Mildred Gloria (Swail) Buck of Belvidere passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, March 14, 2015 in Northwood Care Center after a long illness.  Gloria was born July 15, 1927 in Belvidere, IL, the daughter of Gerald and Mildred (Renwick) Swail.  Gloria married Donald Buck on August 29, 1948, in Belvidere in the First United Methodist Church.  Gloria was a 1945 graduate of Belvidere High School and played Trumpet 1st chair all four years.  It was noted in the 1945 Belvi  yearbook  “Her  twinkling eyes and sunny smile would any man’s heart beguile.”  Gloria was employed at the Boone County Shopper for 34 years. Gloria was born with music in her soul and grew up listening to her father’s band, The Foot Warmers.  There was always a tune being played in Gloria’s home and always a family musical group practicing; the Swail’s Family Band, and then the Stardusters.  Gloria and Donald loved, encouraged, and supported any way they could, their twin sons, David and Dana’s musical talents and their bands; the Esquires and Gulliver.

It was also important to Gloria to give back to the Belvidere Community.  She was a member of; the First Methodist Church of Belvidere Sunshine Circle, Sorosis Club, Women of the Moose, Cub Scout Leader, St. Joseph Hospital Thrift Shop, 1983 Chamber of Commerce Secretary of the Year, Mother’s March of Dimes Chairmen 1967-1974, Election Judge, and Lifetime member of the Boone County Historical Society.  Gloria also enjoyed camping, bowling, and playing double pinochle.

Gloria is loved and will be missed by Donald, her husband of 66 years, their twin sons David G. Buck (Minda) of Toronto, Canada, and Dana L. Buck (Kathleen )of  Rockford; grandchildren, Christine Nantel-Buck of Toronto, Canada,  Jennifer (Brian) Jelloe of Van Nuys, CA, Dr. Carrie (Mathew) Marinaro of South Beloit; great grandchildren; Natasha, Donovan, Spencer, Madison, Dylan, Emily, Lauren and Gianna; nephews and nieces;  Brad (Kathleen) Palmer,  Stacy Bender,  Stuart Bender, and Valerie LeMaster.   Gloria is preceded in death by her parents and sisters.

Donnie and family...It saddened me this morning to read of Gloria's passing. She was truly a bright star. What a thrill it was when you asked me to join "The Stardusters". To spend time with you all was a real treat. Remember the good times and cherish the memories. Peace! Kay
