Obituary

Luraine Cannell went home to Jesus on December 13, 2016 in her Garden Prairie home. Luraine was born April 2, 1920, to Carl and Annette Johnson while being snowed in just outside Hayward, MN.  She later moved to Rockford and graduated from Rockford High School in 1938. She worked various jobs eventually working for Dick Shade as a bookkeeper/secretary.  She met her husband James Peter Cannell at a Rural Youth event and they married three years later, January 29, 1946.  They farmed the rest of their 65 years together.  Luraine demonstrated being a life long learner, of loving and serving well, and how to be a good friend.  She both served and led through PTA, Music Boosters, school boards, 4-H, Extension Council, Homemakers, and Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.  She also taught others her homemaking skills.  Her cookies, bread and candies were particularly well known. She loved to read and learn new vocabulary. But most of all, Luraine devoted herself to creating a loving home for her growing family.  She dearly loved to celebrate with each one of them.  Her eyes lit up and her playful attitude rose whenever a grandchild or great grandchild appeared.  Our warmest thanks and gratitude are extended to the wonderful caregivers that gave Luraine so much love and devotion in these last years.

Survived by daughters, Lois Ramon of Belvidere, Carol (Jerry) Falzone of Loves Park, Julie (Marshall) Newhouse of Capron and Ann (Richard) Carrick of Belvidere; grandchildren, Allison, Scott, Lindsey, Eileen, Leanne, Philip, Kathryn, Bethany, Emily and Molly; great-grandchildren, Nora, Lucas, Lorelei, Elliot, Josephine, Oliver, Evelyn, Julia, Liam, and Hazel. Predeceased by parents; sister, Marion, brother, Robert; and infant son, James.

Lois, Carol, Julie, and Ann: I am so saddened by the loss of your mother, especially at Christmas time. I wish I could be there for you as you have always been there for our family, but it is not realistic for me at this time. Please feel my presence there with you, but even more so, please feel the loving arms of Jesus around you. I don't think you could ever know just how much of a lifeline your mother was for our family, especially for our mom. I am surrounded by memories of her: the curtains that she helped me make, the photos of her with mom and Jan, the recipes of hers. I made her cookie canes for Christmas. Thank you for sharing her with us for all of these decades. We think of her and you as family and I hope to see you soon when the weather permits. Katie, Bethany, and Phil: Love and sympathy to you too. I enjoyed getting to know you. Much love, Jeanne (Jonathon and Michelle are sorry for your loss as well and send sympathy to you, especially Ann, Emily, and Molly whom they knew from the library.)

Luraine will be remembered as one of the kindest people I have known. She was a guardian angel to my mother and sisters, always there to lend support. A wonderful neighbor, her entire family was and is treasured by my family. Thank you Luriane for being the best.

My sincere condolences to Julie, Lois, Carol & Ann (your families). As this is a bittersweet time, it is also a great celebration for your mother, Luraine. I know our great Lord Jesus will comfort each one of you and give you his peace & sustaining love in the months ahead. "His Lord said to him, "Well done, good & faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things. I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord." Matt. 25:21 "Then the King will say to those on His right hand. 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." Matt. 25:34 Your mother is rejoicing & is at peace. It was a honor & privilege to care for & serve your mother. Thank you for the blessed oppportunity. Sincerely...

Lois and Family, May you be blessed with wonderful memories of your mother. Your parents gave so much strength to Boone County. We clearly remember her shopping in our Belvidere store and always so pleasant and caring. May God continue to bless you all.

To the family of Luraine: I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. Your mother and my mother were close as we all grew up together on our farms near Capron. Your Mother was such a caring, kind person and it was such a joy to know her. I will remember her fondly. My deepest sympathies to you.

Dear beautiful family of Luraine Cannell, Larry and I extend our sincere sympathies for your loss. Grandma Cannell was an amazing woman. It was wonderful to read the loving tribute to her in the newspaper. Knowing the Cannell daughters it was probably a collaborative effort with some hearty laughter thrown in- so much love in your family!! Grandma was always a delight to be around and she certainly inspired greatness in her progeny. We are honored to have known her and all her children. May the Lord comfort you in your time of loss and help you to adjust to a world without Grandma Cannell. We know you all have countless precious memories. God bless you all. Larry and Jane McMahon
