Ellen Meddings of Belvidere passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 10, 2017.  Ellen is survived by her son, Christopher Haagenson of Wonder Lake, her beloved husband of 25 years Ken Meddings, her mother, Mary Lou Barry, her sisters Kathleen (Ron) Hayhurst, Patricia Boris, Sheila (Michael) Malinowski, Mary (Keith) Nissen, Coleen (Steve) Sisk, Julie (Scott) Hodzic and her brothers John Walter (Lori) Barry, Timothy Barry, Kevin Barry, and Thomas (Rayford) Barry.

Ellen was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Jennifer Marie in 1978, her father, John W. Barry, her brother, Neal J. Barry, her granddaughter Amaya Joy Haagenson, her mother-in-law, Ina Meddings, and her nephew Thomas Dolan.

Ellen will be especially missed by her God-children, Gregory Malinowski, Veronica (Chris) Hatch, Jayme Kalaulua, and Margaret (Todd) Barrett.  Ellen leaves behind over 40 nieces and nephews who will miss her great smile, generosity, and her special holiday fudge.

Ellen touched the lives of many students studying Spanish at Belvidere High School.  She was most recently a regular substitute for Boone County Schools.  Ellen’s career also includes teaching Spanish at Cocoa Beach High School in Florida, and Round Lake High School in Illinois.

She gave tirelessly of herself by donating her time to service with St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. James Parish.  She taught religious education classes several days a week; and was involved with the Belvidere Historical Society.  Ellen especially loved her little dog Sammy and her special garden where she spent many happy hours.

Ellen always gave her time and energy to helping the Hispanic community of Boone and McHenry Counties.  She was very influential on providing education and resources to local migrant workers.  Her spirit will live with them forever.

Ellen was such a sweet and caring neighbor--and will surely be missed. I treasure the Neighborhood Christmas get-to-gethers, and, of course , recall what fun she had taking pictures and how inept I was finding them on my phone! My heartfelt sympathy to Ken and her many loved ones.

'My Deepest Sympathy to the family of Ellen. She was God' s shining star on earth. Everyone she came in contact with could see the love and kindness in her heart and just wanted to be near her. I am so happy to read all of the beautiful comments from her friends that she had made after she left McHenry. May God Bless you and hold you in his loving arms. You were a very special person to know! Arlene

" It is with such deep condolence I give from my heart for the death of Ellen to all of her family. The Barry's lived down the street from our family and we had so much fun playing outside....kick the can, marco polo in the pool, etc. (Eastwood Manor) Somehow we lost touch and I am so proud of Ellen for what she has accomplished in her life. She is at peace in heaven. I am just so very sorry for your loss. That's why it is so important to make sure you treasure the times with friends and family while you are here. May she dance with the angels.

Ellen was and always will be an amazing Lady

Someone mentioned her preterite tense rap for her upper level Spanish students. I took her class over 10 years ago...and I STILL remember her rap. Tener to Tuv, now you're in the groove. She was such an amazing woman.

One of my favorite memories of Ellen is when I had her as a teacher at Belvidere High school. I want to say this was around 2005. Anyway, she assigned this big project to the class. We were supposed to give a demonstration of our choosing in Spanish on camera. I had always done well in her class, but I didn't do well on my last exam. I was so stressed out about this project. Senora Meddings called my mom one evening and talked to her for over an hour telling her how great of a student I was and how she knew I would do well on this project. If memory serves me, I do believe I received apply A. Her encouragement meant the world to her me. Now, as a teacher myself I remember that dedication and apply it with my own students. She was a huge inspiration to me and will be missed immensely.

My heart goes out to the entire family of Ellen. I have had the honor of knowing her through teaching religious education at St. James. She always had time to talk and was one of the sweetest women I know. She will be greatly missed by her St. James family.

Its a been a long time but I'll always remember your sweet smile and those afternoons where you and my mom would discuss the latest historical society projects together. You made growing up on good ole Hurlbut Ave a fonder memory. Rest easy. Alex Peredna (Jen Riley and kids)

I have known Ellen for almost 10 years now and have had the privilege to be her boss, her colleague, and her friend. She has been such a blessing in my life and I will deeply miss her. She has taught me so much, not only when I needed her help with my Spanish lessons, but also about life in general. She will truely be missed by everyone that knew her.

When Ellen joined our staff at BHS, she brought to us so much experience but was still young and spunky. Although she was my peer, I learned so much from her. I'm grateful to have been one of her "students" and even luckier to call her friend. Her memory will live on every year I teach students the silly songs and the preterite rap she taught me. Besos
