Obituary

Daniel A. Johnson, 59, of Belvidere, IL died Sunday morning, March 2, 2014 near Nauvoo, IL in an automobile accident. Dan was born March 21, 1954 in Rockford, IL the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley A. Johnson and Patricia Williams. He married Bonnie J. Johnson in Beloit, Wisconsin on June 23, 1990. Dan attended North Boone High School, Rock Valley College, Augustana College, and Northwestern University, receiving a B.S. in Civil Engineering from University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was employed with Carpenter’s Local 792 as a journeyman carpenter.
Dan was a brilliant craftsman, musician, academic, and outdoorsman, with an appreciation for nature, beauty, philosophy, and a hard day’s work. When not engaged in lively conversation or sitting quietly with his thoughts, he was a carefree, charismatic, and immeasurably lovable man. Dan was a demanding individual, of others and especially himself, but his strong personality complemented his spirited nature. Each emotion was genuine, each complement or criticism honest, and a laugh or smile was a reward. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Dan is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughters, Danielle and Lauren; stepdaughter, Jeanette (Harvey) Nalan; parents, Stan and Marilyn Johnson; mother, Patricia Williams; sisters, Karen (Thad) Prevett, Julie (Alan) Ackerman; brother, David Johnson; nieces and nephews; sisters in-law, Pat (David) Thompson, Mary (Jack) Amato, Rose (John) Dionysious; as well as step grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2104 in Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services; Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Chapel, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere, IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014 in Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, 105 E. Grove Street, Poplar Grove, IL with Rev. Paul Nolden officiating. Burial will be in Orth Cemetery. Memorials can be given in care of the family.

I am so sorry that your family lost a husband and father. I am sorry for losing a good friend. Dan was the best carpenter I ever worked with, the carpenter trade has lost a truly talented craftsman. I enjoyed our conversations about politics and many other subjects. We didn't always agree but we both respected each others opinion and listened to each other. The most important ly we agreed to remain good friends. Not a day went by that he didn't discuss how proud he was of his girls. He was sure proud of how they did in sports. I could see in his eyes how much he loved them. I will miss you Dan, rest in peace my friend.

I was sorry to learn about Dan's death. I moved to Poplar Grove with my parents when I was in fourth grade where I met Dan at school. He was rather sweet on me and sent me a love note, in code. I broke the code and learned what the message said; it was very sweet, but I am sure it embarrassed him and our relationship cooled after that. He played baritone in band, and I recall as a cheerleader, having his number to cheer for him when he made any points on our grade school basketball team--GO, Poplar Grove Eagles! Dan was a quick and agile player, who scored many points for the team. I had to go through some series of jumps and cartwheels after he scored the points. Boy, was I tired, after some of those games! I want to comment how well his obituary was written, and that even through the years, the characteristics described could be said of him, even in grade school. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I remember Dan in Bye Bye Birdie in high school. He seemed like a really cool guy especially from a young girl seeing him perform. Rest in peace and my deepest sympathies to his wife and family.
