Obituary

Ann Elias Hanson, 93, of Poplar Grove, IL passed away peacefully in her sleep, early Thursday morning, January 28, 2016, in Highview in the Woodlands senior care center in Rockton IL after a lingering illness. .She had been dealing with Alzheimer’s disease for the last six years and was most recently in Hospice care for a worsening heart condition.

Ann was born July 7,1922, in Norwood, Massachusetts, the daughter of John and Jennie (Lewis) Elias.  The family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where Ann grew up during the great depression.  She was an excellent student and tutored other students in high school.  A strikingly beautiful and talented woman, she was runner up in the Miss Michigan contest.  She was the first waitress at The Dixie Drive-in restaurant in Detroit.  That restaurant, started by her three brothers, grew to be one of the largest restaurant chains in the country.

During World War II, Ann joined the Navy Anchorettes, an entertainment troupe that put on dances for enlisted sailors.  She was fond of telling the story about attending one of those dances at Belle Isle Casino in Detroit in 1941.  She looked across the room and was struck by the sight of a handsome young sailor who would change her life.  She danced that night with James B. Hanson, of Madison, Wisconsin, and the spark was lit.  Shortly thereafter Jim was sent to Pearl Harbor, where he was stationed when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941.  She was wrapping his Christmas present when she heard the news of the attack on the radio.  She cried for days until she got the news that he had survived the attack.

After several years of long-distance courtship, she and Jim were married on August 12, 1944, in Detroit.  After WWII they settled in Madison, Wisconsin with their two boys.  Jim eventually became an airline pilot, and Ann made the decision to stay home and raise her children.  They made their home in several different locations during Jim’s airline career.  Ann was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed taking care of her home and family.

Ann is loved and will be greatly missed by her husband, Jim Hanson, Sr.; children James (Colleen) Hanson, Jr. of Poplar Grove, IL; John (Peggy) Hanson of Northfield, MN; grandchildren, James (Christi) Hanson III, Mark (Katie) Hanson, Catherine (Ian) Sheppard and Christine (Robby) Cecil; great-grandchildren Cole, Chase, Tate, Adam, Alison and Sailor; and many nieces and nephews.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Fred, Louie and John Elias; sisters, Mary Kassab and Helen Morgan.
