Obituary

Darlene Suszane Brei

(December 23, 1946 – December 18, 2015)

Darlene was given life by her Creator and was born in Cecil, WI on December 23, 1946 – the daughter of the late Leon Gordan Schultz and Ila May (Thompson) Schultz.  She received new birth in Holy Baptism and became a child of God and heir of Heaven at Peace United Church of Christ in Cecil, WI.

Darlene had a happy childhood, growing up in Cecil with her brother (Lee) and sister (Bonnie).  Her son (Jamie) recalls stories of Darlene chasing her sister with a pet rooster.  Darlene also shared stories of playing badminton with her girlfriend, Gloria Gean Kaylor, who would come from Milwaukee to visit her grandmother every summer.  Darlene attended Shawano Senior High School, Home of the Shawano Indians at that time.

On April 15, 1967 Darlene married the love of her life, James Emil Brei, at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano, WI.  Jim and Darlene raised their two boys, Shawn and Jamie, in the home that Jim both designed and built.  This is the home where Darlene worked full-time as a House Wife and Mother, the best wife and mother anyone could ask for.  This home also holds many cherished memories, ones that the Brei Family hope to hang on to and never forget.  Darlene was always an animal lover, but had a special spot in her heart for the many dogs she and Jim had over the years.  Jim and Darlene shared several adventures together, traveling to, among other places, Sturgis, SD for the Motorcycle Rally, Mount Rushmore in the Badlands and Black Hills of SD, Yellowstone National Park, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN, Albuquerque NM for the International Balloon Festival, and Darlene’s favorite – Niagara Falls, which she visited twice.

Most importantly, Darlene possessed a tremendous faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ, which allowed her to accept her diagnosis of Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer for what it was, saying, “It is what it is.”  All Darlene wanted was to go to her heavenly home so that she could, “Bite into a Big, Juicy Orange, letting the juices run down my cheeks,” explained Darlene, “and have a Big Glass of Ice Water.”

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, James “Jim” Emil Brei; two sons:  Shawn (Kathy) Brei of Eau Claire, WI and Jamie (Amber) Brei of Wausau, WI; four grandchildren:  Emily, Shelby, and Rylee Brei – all of Eau Claire, WI, and Ella Brei of Wausau, WI; her mother, Ila May (Thompson) Schultz of Shawano, WI; one brother, Lee (Judy) Schultz of Kaukauna, WI; one sister, Bonnie (Delbert) DeBauch of Gillett, WI, and several nieces and nephews.  Darlene was preceded in death by her father, Leon Gordan Schultz of Shawano, WI; her in-laws, Emil and Hildegard Brei of Shawano, WI; and earlier this year, her sister-in-law, Shirley McGhee of Pukwana, SD.

God granted Darlene an earthly life of 68 years, 11 months, and 25 days.  On Friday Night, December 18, 2015 God called Darlene to her heavenly home and gave her the crown of life.  Friends and Family are invited to attend Darlene’s Funeral Service, being held at Immanuel Lutheran Church (1045 Belvidere Road in Belvidere, IL) on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 with Rev. Allan Buss officiating.  A Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 10 am with the service starting at 11 am.  A Luncheon and Time of Sharing will follow the service.  Darlene’s mortal remains are being cremated and will eventually be laid to rest at Shattucks Grove Cemetery (9600 Reeds Crossing Road – Belvidere, IL) in the glorious certainty of the resurrection of the body from the grave when Christ returns in all His glory.  The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.  Blessed be the name of the Lord!
