What’s Your Life Verse?

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord (Jesus) with all your heart and mind. Do not rely on your own insight or understanding.  In ALL your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge God, and He will direct and make your paths plain and straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:5-6 are the verses from God’s Word that Steve and I have chosen to be our “life verse” as a couple and also the Scripture we use to guide us as we operate Anderson Funeral & Cremation Services.  People have as many reasons as there are verses for choosing a specific Scripture passage as their life verse.  A “life verse” is quite simply a portion of Scripture that speaks directly to your heart or a verse that you choose to help guide you through life. Steve and I chose Proverbs 3:5-6 because it reminds us of our True North.

Imagine you are sailing on the ocean and can’t see land or hiking in the wilderness with no landmarks, how do you know what direction you are traveling?  Since the earliest times, mankind has found their way using the sun and stars to help them navigate through their journeys. If you live in the northern hemisphere, the North Star is one of the ways you can tell which direction you are traveling. What if it’s cloudy and you can’t see the sun or there’s a storm and you can’t see the stars?  How do you navigate? Most people would never start out on an expedition without knowing how to interpret the signs in nature and also taking a reliable compass with them to help navigate their direction.  It would be a matter of life and death if they couldn’t navigate toward the correct direction.

True North is the direction that points directly toward the geographic North Pole.  It’s a fixed point on the Earth’s globe – it doesn’t move unlike magnetic north.  Magnetic north is the direction that a compass needle points to as it aligns with the Earth’s magnetic field.  The magnetic North Pole shifts and changes over time in response to changes in the Earth’s magnetic core. The difference between the two could be a couple hundred miles because the magnetic field is always changing. True north never changes.

Just as true north never changes, scripture tells us that God has always pointed to His Son, Jesus Christ the Messiah as True North.  The Apostle John wrote “In the beginning [before all-time] was the Word (Jesus), and the Word (Jesus) was with God, and the Word (Jesus) was God Himself. He was present originally with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him (Jesus); and without Him (Jesus) was not even one thing made that has come into being. In Him (Jesus) was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it or suppressed it.” John 1:1-5.  Jesus is True North, He is constant, has always existed with God the Father and is our unchanging source of truth.  When we say that Jesus is our true north, we mean that “Jesus is the constant, unchanging source of truth and life. Jesus Christ the Messiah is always the same, yesterday, today, yes and forever to the ages.” Hebrews 13:8. There is very little in the world that we can trust and it appears that everything is shifting and changing at a rate that is faster than ever before in human history

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord (Jesus) with all your heart and mind. Do not rely on your own insight or understanding.  In ALL your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge God, and He will direct and make your paths plain and straight. Proverbs 3:5-6   This verse reminds Steve and I that Jesus Christ is our only absolute source for sound guidance, healing, and complete peace.  When you “lean on” Jesus, you are literally shifting your focus from whatever you are doing or the situation you are in to focusing on Jesus. The visual would be that you are standing facing Jesus with your eyes locked onto His, allowing Him to be in control. You are placing all of your confidence to lead you in the right direction in His hands.

Especially in these unprecedented times that we are living in it’s crucial that we keep our focus on something and most importantly someone we can trust to guide us and protect us. Psalm 18:30 tells us “What a God we have!  His road stretches straight and smooth. His way is perfect.  The word of the Lord is tested and tried; He is a shield to all those who take refuge and put their trust in Him.  Everyone who runs toward Him makes it!”

As followers of Jesus, we welcome His guidance in the misleading world we are traveling through. Our True North in Jesus will keep us in a precise direction. He will lead us on the obvious path – the straight and smooth path that leads us to abundant life here on earth and for eternity with Him.
